Best Dressed - Golden Globes 2013

First of all I'm guest posting over at Miss Information today, head over and check it out!

Like almost everyone else in the blogosphere, I'm going to put in my two cents on who I thought brought the gorgeous last night at the Golden Globe awards (I only caught the first 1/2 hour, but I could tell that Tina and Amy totally rocked as co-hosts).  Here are my picks for best dressed:

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

And yes, the "wonky boob" that I referred to in my review of this collection made an appearance (why doesn't someone tell Raf to rip those flaps/folds off?).  Wonky boob aside, this dress was just gorgeous on her, perfect color, great belt, and she has the body to pull it off (it looks better on her than it did on the runway)! Oh and check out the guy in the sunglasses behind her - he's all like "Hello, Miss Lawrence!"

 

Naomi Watts in Zac Posen (about the only time you'll ever see a Zac Posen pick on this here blog - his clothes usually grate on me) the color is gorgeous on her and the back (which I saw on TV is really beautiful with the fabric mix).

 

Rebecca Miller in Marc Jacobs - didn't see this on the carpet, but when I saw this picture I just fell in love. The length with the tall boots, so unexpected and quirky, it works and I want it! If you have to tag along to an event like this, this is how you do it!

Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen - she just looked so radiant (her hair was fabulous)!

My Take - Dior Couture Fall 2012

It's been ages since I've tackled a "my take" (basically a more user/wallet friendly version of a runway look).   I'm going to try and tackle some of these "runway to reality" type looks more often, with all of my amateur runway reviews it's nice to see how some of those looks can translate into realistic outfit inspiration.  First up is this look from the Dior Couture Fall 2012 collection:

I noted in my review how much I loved the cobalt blue paired with the pink metallic shoes.  It's a fresh color combo that I hadn't thought of.  And how simple is a blue dress and pink shoes?  I put together a dressier look, one that can be dressed up or down and a more casual version.

My Five - Christian Dior Couture Fall 2012

Welcome to Couture Week!  Otherwise known as my week long coverage of my picks from the Fall 2012 Haute Couture shows.  Away we go!

This marks the first collection for newly installed Dior designer Raf Simons and there was a mild hysteria over the whole thing.  When I heard that Mr. Simons landed the Dior job I can honestly say that my first reaction was nothing.  I had no opinion.  I felt that Bill Gaytten had found his footing  (see the outstanding IMO Fall 2012 ready to wear collection), but I guess they wanted a "name".  So here we are.  After looking at the collection my first reaction was that he did a great job paying tribute to Christian Dior and the "new look" - nipped in waist, full skirt.  My second reaction was, what's going on with the chests?  The bodices of some of the dresses were weird.  They have foldy out (such technical language from this apparel major) fabric where the breasts are and it makes it look like the girl's boobs are all wonky.  I like to call it the "wonky boob" - see below:

Why do that?  Take that fabric away and you have a beautiful dress.  Sheesh.

Enough of the "wonky boob".  Overall the collection was beautifully done, lots of crisp cuts and beautiful fabrics with dashes of pink, yellow, red and cobalt blue.  I think Mr. Simons was out to set the table for his tenure at Dior and not be too radical, doing exactly what he should do, pay tribute to the legacy while pushing forward towards the future.  I'm eager to see what's next!  Here are my picks, enjoy!

Gah, the embellishment on this dress is to die for - that peek of yellow at the bottom is killing me!  Love! (see Alber Elbaz over there on the left with the glasses?  Looks like he's noticing that part of the dress too!)

This dress rocks my world!  Check out Alber looking pensive, which is pretty much how he stayed during the show - lol!

Metallic slab of a belt?  Yes, please!

This dress matches the lady with the cardigan back there - that cardigan is going to haunt my dreams, it's in every. single. shot.

Check out the pink metallic shoes with the cobalt blue dress - I likey!

Black, tailored suit.  Doesn't get more classic than this folks!

 
A couple of beautiful dresses with an unfortunate case of "wonky boob".  Grrr...

Dior Resort 2013 Inspired by Prada Spring 2001? (update)

*just received an Anonymous comment below that the Dior print is from Dior 50's Couture dress (I wish I could find a picture for confirmation). So maybe Prada was influenced by Dior or maybe it was just a coincidence?  The saga continues...

Just a follow up to my picks from Christian Dior's Resort 2013 collection from earlier today, I noticed that the one print in the collection reminded me A LOT of the print from Prada's Spring 2001 collection.  And while yes, I do have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of Prada collections (and SpongeBob cartoons) this print was pretty much in every ad for the brand and editorial - so it's not obscure.  Dior's isn't an exact copy by any means (there's more white space) but jeez it's awfully close.  This isn't lawsuit material or anything and Lord knows as a fabric designer I see designs that are "cousins of" like this constantly, designs that have different artwork, yet give off the same feel/effect.  What do you think?  Is it too close?  Does it even matter since it's been over a decade since Prada's print debuted?

My Five - Christian Dior Resort 2013

Another really strong, ladylike collection from the Dior team.  This comes hot on the heels of the outstanding Fall 2012 collection that I wish would magically appear in my closet come September.  This collection carries over some of the color palette from Fall with that dusty purple that really is beautiful, while also inviting orange back to the party.  Please enjoy my picks!

How amazing is this leather jacket?  Wow!

White gold is going to be huge in the next few months.

My Five - Christian Dior Fall 2012

I'm not going to lie, I've been hard on the house of Dior since the departure of Galliano (after his boneheaded meltdown - jerk).  I was a huge fan of Galliano's way of fusing the past with the future while always keeping the essence of what the Dior brand is.  After he was shown the door things went way downhill.  But the tides have turned with this collection, at least in my mind.  Bill Gaytten and his team seem to have found their footing.  The ballet inspired collection was very "Dior" and that made my heart sing.  The color palette was so lux. You know how some colors come off as garish and cheap, but with a tweak suddenly turn into something that seems so posh that you want to run out and get everything you can in those colors?  Well this collection did that for me.  I love the dove greys, the soft peaches (not 1980's peach!), that muted purple that is so elegant.  I want to wear nothing but these colors this fall.  Here are my many picks, enjoy!

This picture really embodies the color mix in this collection that rocked my world.

This fabric is fab-u-lous, it appears to be some sort of mohair damask deal.  I wish I could see it up close.  The fuzzy, matte with the shine is fabulous.  And I'm not even going to address that necklace that I want NOW!

I need this dress.  Just to wear.

My Five - Christian Dior Couture Spring 2012

*Sigh* I so want Dior to have some direction again, I want that SHOW that we used to get, that homage to the past while at the same time reaching to the future.  That perfect mix of technical and fantasy, old and new.  McQueen did/does this masterfully, Galliano was right there with him.  Such a shame he effed it up by being a d-bag.  Anyhoo, this collection was nice, but too much an homage to "old" Dior, as in "oh, there's the new look silhouette, from the 40's and 50's!" Oh well, enough of my rant.  Here are my picks:

Without Galliano, Dior has become an uninspired wasteland.  Okay, that may be a bit harsh, wasteland - no, uninspired - yes.  We've been here and done this before.  This collection wasn't a complete loss (otherwise, I wouldn't have even bothered with a post), there are a few things I found interesting.  Here are my picks:
