Book Review - "Spirit's Key" by Edith Cohn (#4 - 2016)

Spirit's Key by Edith Cohn

I picked up this book because the author went to my university (NC State) and it looked interesting.  It's a kids chapter book (ages 9-12), so it's really easy to read and nothing too deep or complicated.  Spirit is the main character, she's 12 years old and hopes that she has inherited the family gift - the ability to see a person's future when they hold a key belonging to that person.  She and her father live on a remote island, in a small village.  The island has wild dogs, dogs who the locals think are dangerous.  Spirit had adopted one of the dogs and named him Sky, however Sky has recently died.  Then more and more of the wild dogs begin to die and the locals start becoming scared.  In the meantime Spirit has started seeing the ghost of her beloved Sky.  Could Sky's ghost be the key to discovering her own gifts as well as helping to solve the mystery of the dead dogs?  This was a pretty decent book, I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it.  I think it's great for the age group and for kids that like mysteries.

Kids Consignment Sale Tips

Only part of my first purge for consignment almost 2 years ago.

If you have kids then I'm sure you've probably heard of these really big consignment sales that happen a couple of times a year for kids clothes, toys, gear and maternity items? Most areas have them, usually in the early Spring and Fall (check online or in the paper for locations). The sales are usually held by local churches or even independent organizations. If you’ve never been to one and want to know more or even if you have been to one but found it so overwhelming (that's what happened to me my first time) that you just didn’t know what to do, never fear. I’m here to give you some tips and insight into what I’ve learned by going to and consigning in these sales. I’ll start first with how to shop them:

Part of this past Fall's purge to go to consignment.

First of all you will need to have a game plan. For me this means taking stock of what my girl has and what she needs for the coming season. I usually pull all the clothes out of her closet/drawers for the coming season and start to make a list of what we have that will work. Then that leads to a list of what we will need. Be really aware of what the needs are and will be. For example, I know my girl hates wearing jeans and other woven pants, I mean HATES. As much as I would love her to wear them, it’s worthless for me to even buy them because she flat out refuses to put and keep them on. So I know that I need to find knit leggings and other knit bottoms that can be paired with comfy knit tunics and tops.

Okay, you have your list and are ready to head inside to start shopping. I usually hit the clothes first, then the shoes, then the toys and lastly the décor/gear. I find that I can get the most bang for my buck with the clothes and shoes than the toys or décor/gear. Go to the racks and start going through the clothes (these are usually grouped by size and gender). What I found the most helpful is to act like a fashion editor and just start pulling any clothes from the racks that you like and catch your eye – don’t dwell too much, just start pulling. This will usually mean you have a large stack of clothes in your hands by the time you finish in your size range, but that’s a good thing. Take your stack off to the side (these places usually have some sort of place where you can sit down on the floor, etc) and then the real editing can begin. Go through what you’ve pulled, be objective and ruthless. Make sure there are no stains, pulls or rips. A big issue I’ve had is buying an outfit (as a set), getting home and the top and bottom are two different sizes – so check all items in a set for correct sizing! Start assembling outfits from separates so you know you’ve got outfits and not just a bunch of random pieces. Once you have your outfits you can then fill in with any tops or bottoms that can work with the other tops and bottoms you already have at home or have found at the sale.

Now if you want to consign (which means making some moola to help cover your purchases), most of these sales have their rules and guidelines for what you can and can’t consign so make sure you read those really carefully! It’s generally a good idea to consign and/or volunteer to help set up/tear down the sale because you can usually go to some sort of pre-sale before the sale is open to the public (some do and some don't offer that option so again, read all the fine print). If that is an option, I highly recommend doing that if you have the time, because you have access to all the great stuff before the general public does. You also may have the opportunity to meet and chat with the mom of one of the guys in Lady Antebellum (which happened to me last Spring – she could not have been nicer) or other interesting people you may not usually meet. I try to consign stuff with every sale because I can declutter and make a little extra cash at the same time. Usually I either make more than I spend at the sale or break even, so that’s a good thing! Each sale has a different percentage you can earn with consigning so make sure you read that information too. I personally like to consign with my local church’s sale because I like that their percentage goes to their mission/outreach programs and I just really like the way they handle the sale.

So that's my quick kids consigning guidelines.  So have any of you consigned/shopped these sort of sales?  If so feel free to share any additional tips.  And please let me know if you have any further questions.  Happy hunting!

Kindergarten Countdown - 27 Days

That's right, my little girl starts kindergarten in 27 days.  I haven't fully grasped this yet.  She's totally excited and so ready to get the show on the road.  I, however, am sort of freaking out.  She's growing up so fast (how cliche is that?).  Of course that first year was no fun, I wouldn't repeat the first year if you paid me.  That year almost killed me, but since then, the time has really flown by.  And now she's 5 and starting school.  Yikes!  Since the first day is right around the corner, I've started the back to school shopping.  The first purchases were her backpack and lunchbox, which she picked out from the Lands' End catalog.  And of course we had to get it personalized with her name per her request ;o)

(embroidery is extra)

Anyone else out there have a little one heading to kindergarten this year?

Happy Weekend!

I'm a lot late with this post, 'cause it's been one of THOSE days.  The preschool called at 11am this morning (while I was knee deep cleaning up artwork on the computer) and my girl had gone and gotten a head injury on the playground.  A kid pushed her/she fell and had the bad luck to fall right onto a pine cone and cut the back of her little noggin.  It's not bad, but there was lots of blood and obviously hurt feelings.  So I went and picked her up, and let me tell you she was super whiny and clingy the rest of the day.  It's just how it goes.  So the house is a mess, I've got a ton of new work projects, grocery shopping to do, a sick hubby, etc, etc.  Oh well, it'll all get done when it gets done.

I'll leave you with this image from JAK & JIL.  It makes me smile because kids are kids no matter how fancy they are.   Sometimes boogers have to be picked even when you are rocking Chanel! (I will note that we are firmly in the middle of this phase right now in the house and it's so gross!)
Hope you all have a great weekend!

My Christmas Vacation

It occurred to me that I never let you guys know where we ended up on our Christmas vacation.  Well, on December 26th we packed up the car and headed down to Orlando, Florida for a little Disney action.   Well, let me preface this by saying the REAL reason we ended up in Orlando was for the Champs Sports Bowl, because if NC State goes to a bowl game, my hubby will be there.  We both went to NCSU but somehow I haven't been to a football game in years.  I actually enjoy going to a football game.  I like the game and I love our mascots (I've been obsessed with Ms. Wuf for pretty much my whole life).  But I digress.  We arrived in Orlando and man, it was COLD.  I mean freezing.  We had fun in spite of the record setting cold temperatures, you just can't be unhappy at Disney.  We hit the Animal Kingdom and hung out at Downtown Disney the rest of the time, she's just 2 1/2 and got worn out way too quickly.  When she gets older we'll hit up the other parks and she'll be into it that much more!  Here are some pictures.

Happy Weekend and I Love This! - Land of Nod bowl

Well the weekend is here, which means school for me (I'm so backwards)!  I'm going to get my computer looked at next week and see if I can finally get some pictures to upload on the darn blog.  It really should not be this hard.  Anyhoo, I found this post in my drafts folder from who knows when, but I still really dig it - I mean how cool is this bowl?  I know, totally not fashion related, but again, I hate to post without a picture.  Have a fab weekend and see you Monday!

Okay, I love this bowl so much I just had to share.  It certainly would make it much more fun to wake up and drag yourself into the kitchen for breakfast every morning.

Happy Weekend and Children's Clothing Keepsake Quilt Finale!

I hope everyone has a marvelous weekend! Since my hubby is working almost non-stop it's going to be another low key one (and a bit somber with the anniversary of 9/11, which always makes me very sad).

On a lighter note, remember a couple of months ago one of my friends was working on a keepsake quilt made from my daughter's clothes that I wanted to keep, but not store?  Well, it's now completed and is absolutely beautiful!  It is exactly what I had pictured in my mind and she did an amazing job!  Here it is (from her blog):

Now some pictures I took (not the best in the world, I'm no photographer.  Obviously - ha!)

The center of every square has a motif from from the clothes in it, either the print from the front or some sort of other decorative embroidery, even a pocket from one dress.  So special!

The back of the quilt is Paula Prass' Garden Trellis in pink (a perfect mid-scale print in a pink that's not too sweet or hot).

The top full size picture isn't showing as large on my blog - but pop over to Kheli's blog post for a larger picture and a great description.  Kheli is a fabulous quilter who has an Etsy store too.  Keep her in mind if you ever want an amazing quilt made.  Her work is perfection!  I can't thank her enough for this treasured keepsake!

*Update* Children's Clothing Keepsake Quilt

You may remember about two months ago I blogged about wanting a keepsake quilt for my little one's baby clothes, well one of my friends (and former co-worker) is making one for me as we speak and she posted a little preview on her blog.  She's a super talented quilter and it's been really nice working with her again - well, I sent the clothes and my preference for fabric for the back, she's doing all the real work!   Check out this square:
What's great is that I can look at each pattern and remember the outfit - awwww.  I'm so excited!!!

Just a couple of things...

First, I just want to let you know that I (finally) created a Facebook page - so run, don't walk over and "Like" me (really, really like me - please?!).

Secondly, it's my sweet little girl's 2nd Birthday today!  Hard to believe that it's been 2 whole years since she arrived, some days it seems like yesterday (and some days, like 20 years ago -LOL!).  We took this picture during a little pre-b'day celebration at our "for sale" house with friends there.  *Notice her crazy hair, just like mine, no matter what you do to it, it always wants to just stick out everywhere :oP

Lastly, it's also my youngest brother's 23rd Birthday!  He of "Days of Our Lives", Funny or Die and more recently "Parental Control" fame.  He's making his way in LA!

I'm now going to attempt to make some cupcakes - yum!

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Who thought this was a good idea?

I got this lovely email in my inbox this morning:

Funny thing is, I was at Target Monday morning (buying diapers for the little one) and saw these on the shelf and about upchucked.  Yes, diapers printed to look like jeans.  This is my opinion, but I think they are just about the ugliest things I have seen.  I know it's hot in the summer, but how hard is it to throw a pair of shorts or bloomers on a kid?  Do we need to encourage diapers as outerwear in public (because you know people will just think these replace pants).  And Target, really I expect more from you.  Tacky!  What do you think?  Am I overreacting?

I want this! - Children's Clothing Keepsake Quilt

I've been purging a bit lately, anticipating a (hopefully soon) move.  I want to get rid of things we don't need or want anymore.  This includes lots of baby stuff  - and boy can you accumulate tons of do dads when you have a kid.  Most of the stuff I've already purged we hardly used.  We aren't planning on having another little one so I also am getting rid of things she's outgrown/finished using.

The point of all this rambling is that I'm totally digging the idea of a quilt made out of the little one's outgrown clothes (the "sentimental" ones) that I decided to keep.  I went through her outgrown stuff about 4 months ago and honestly I thought it would be harder to purge - I kept hearing people say it was so difficult letting go of the clothing, so emotional.  Well, maybe I'm totally heartless, but I got rid of 95% of it without batting an eye (meanwhile, my Mother was with me and I think she cried more than I did).  But the question remained, what to do with the keepers?  I don't want to just keep them in a plastic storage bin forever, seems pointless.  So I thought and thought and decided that a quilt would be a useful and lovely keepsake.  Here are some images I found for inspiration:

Now, I don't quilt, so I'll have to get on the ball and figure out where to get it made.  I'm still working on that part.  Do you all like this idea?  Any other suggestions?

Happy Mother's Day!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!  And I hope all the Mommies out there have a wonderful day - you've earned it!  Stay tuned, I'm (finally) going to do my first giveaway on Monday - it's a little something to say "thanks" for reading.  See you then...

What a week...

This is not how my daughter and I look this week (or ever - ha!)  It's so sweet and yet so foreign to me.  In my family's version the little girl would have red hair sticking up in all directions running full speed and I would be in flats and pants (most likely a stain of some sort on them) running after her. In other words, we would just be a messy blur!  Ah, the toddler years...

...it's been one of those "Why-did-I-get-out-of-bed-I-need-a-vacation-NOW" weeks, the bad news is that it's only Wednesday.  After a totally heinous trip to the park yesterday morning that involved me falling on my butt in mud while holding the little one (we are okay, I'm a bit sore, but no major physical injury.  Mental - well that's another story - LOL!) and trying to get some work done on a couple of projects I have in the works, which has been all but impossible.  Mama said there would be days/weeks like this...

Great rugs on One Kings Lane today

Sure, these rugs are from The Rug Market Kids (and some are certainly directed at the kiddos) but they are fab!  They are on the small side, but who doesn't need a smaller rug every now and then, especially at such good prices!  Check them out over at One Kings Lane (let me know if you want an invite and I'll get you one).

I want this! - Crayon Rocks

Okay, these are just way too cool.  I know they are for the kiddos, but who wouldn't want some of these?  Once my little one turns 3 (they are recommended for ages 3+) I imagine having some of these piled up in a cool bowl in the middle of the little table I had as a kid (which I painted with black chalkboard paint a few years ago) with some blank paper and my little Picasso - ha! - coloring up a storm.  And in this little fantasy none of my walls would ever be touched with one of these crayon rocks.  This is why it's a fantasy because you know my crazy girl would color on everything but the paper!  Anyway, these are on my must have list for sure!

Love this! Polka Dot Little Girls Room

I just adore this room designed by Emily Clark (which I found via Design Dazzle).  Love the polka dots on the wall, love the monogram pillows, just the overall vibe is so adorable for a little girl/tween.

I want this! - All week long barrettes

These barrettes are so adorable for a little one.  I'm not really a "days of the week" type person (ie. I was never into the underwear, just didn't find the humor or point - "Dude, I'm totally rocking my Tuesday underwear but it's *snicker* Friday!" - if that's what people do, I have no idea), but these are so simple and fun.

I Love These! - No Slippy Hair Clippies

My little one in one of her Hair Clippies

Okay, I'm gonna slip into children's stuff again, but I just want to say how much I love No Slippy Hair Clippies!  They make absolutely adorable hair clips for little girls, lined in velvet and made in the USA.  I bought a bunch for the little one when she was about 11 months old.  They have a great selection and colors and are so well made that they can handle the rough and tumble toddlers (though right now mine is going through a "don't put anything on my head" phase so the clips are on hiatus, along with hats).  Here are some of my picks:
Abby - $8 (we have it in pink and brown - in picture)

Sam - $8 (we have this exact one - goes with almost every outfit)

Oh, I could go on and on.  But you get the idea.  Go and check it out for yourselves, they would make great stocking stuffers.  Right now they are running a 20% discount through this Sunday (12/6/09) - click here to access that special page.

*Note:  I didn't receive any compensation for tooting their horn, I just really love the clips and I love that they are manufactured here in the US.  Though I wouldn't be opposed to some swag - ha ha!

What the frog?

How much do I love our Frog Pod bath toy keeper from Boon, Inc?  A lot!  I swear this may be one of the most useful baby/kid products out there.  It makes bathtime clean up so much quicker and easier, plus it's completely adorable.  Check out their other great products, so well designed and useful!

Something to cheer me up

I've had a rough week so far - heck, I've had a rough year - so I need some cheering up. This song always makes me smile when I hear it. Sure, it's really for preschoolers, but us adults can appreciate it too! Do enjoy "Everywhere I go" by my daughter's favorite, Moose A. Moose via Noggin. (It's also really good to remember that troubles are the none-iest!)
