Big day!

It's not only her big day:

But it's her big day too!
BIG congrats to Sarah Burton and the team at Alexander McQueen and their amazing work on Kate's gorgeous wedding gown!  I'm hoping this dress will start a trend of wedding dresses with sleeves - yay!

And I can't not show what Victoria Beckham wore to the wedding (Philip Treacy hat, Victoria Beckham dress - natch, Louboutin heels).  I'm kinda loving that she wore her hair in a ponytail.

Sorry, I've been a bit MIA this week - big doings here and I've not had time to blog.  I hope to be back at it daily soon - hang in there.   Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!!

My Five - Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2011

A pretty straightforward collection with a nice dose of sparkle and shine.  I will say that I wanted to see more prints, what is DVF without those stellar prints?  Here are my five favorite looks, enjoy!

Love These! - Emi-Jay Hair Ties

A few months ago I decided to try out a  Emi-Jay Hair Tie.  I've heard a lot of buzz about these and how great they are.  You've probably heard about them too, they were created by two teen girls with part of the proceeds from sales going to several charities.  Upon first inspection, I thought there was no way that this piece of elastic fabric tied in a knot at one end would hold my thick, somewhat unruly hair.  Boy was I wrong, it has quickly become my favorite hair tie.  It absolutely does not snag the hair and hurt, it also minimizes the ponytail bump.  You can wear it on your wrist with out it digging in or looking like a "crazy gal with her hair elastic on her wrist" (we've all been there).  So there you go, I'm sold.  The only drawback is that the elastic does stretch out faster than a traditional hair elastic, so I'm actually looking to replace the one I have.  Here are some of the ones I'm eyeballing.
Metallic Collection - $10.99

Mini-trend Alert!

Hey guys, I'm going to have to postpone the second installment of Uniform Dressing until next week (where I'll hit it twice).  There are some things going on behind the scenes here in Spryland that need to be addressed (don't worry they are good things, not bad ones) but we have a lot of things to coordinate and work out which involves lots of time and phone calls.  I'll let you know about it a bit later.  Unfortunately, it doesn't involve a job for me yet, but I'm still working on that.  In the meantime enjoy this little mini-trend I spied late last week.

Saw these recently and they remind me of each other - a cool take on the stripe trend.  Funny how it's hitting home and clothing at the same time - love when that happens!

What I Wore Wednesday!

I'm linking up with The Pleated Poppy again for WIWW!  The only shots I had that looked good were the ones where I'm looking down - ha!  Away we go...
Top - Tory Burch
Pants - Old Navy
Shoes - Cynthia Vincent for Target

Sweater - Theory
Tank - Target
Pants - Old Navy
Shoes - Payless
Necklace - Charlotte Russe (love it, but it's starting to fall apart after only a few months - that's what you get for $11)

Here's a close up of the shoes, I just love them.  Got them years ago at Payless (my old office in NYC was above a big Payless - danger!).  I haven't worn them a lot, they've pretty much sat in my closet since 2007, but I rediscovered them a couple of months ago and put them back in rotation.  Glad I did!

By the way - the dreaded denim printed diapers are back - saw them at Target yesterday.  Again - WHY?!?!

A favor to ask...

I have a little survey so I can figure out how to be able to focus more on topics you, my fine readers, enjoy and want to see.  Time will be very precious when I get back into the working world and I want to make this blog more useful, fun and enjoyable for everyone.  So, if you don't mind could you take a few minutes and answer this quick survey?  I really appreciate it!!!

I Want This! - Limited Edition McQueen Scarf

Yeah, you can just add this to my ever growing list of wants.  It's a silk scarf created to coincide with the Met Museum's Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition and will be available at McQueen's stores in May for $495.  I love the colors and of course I always love the signature McQueen skulls.  Gorgeous!
(and here's a little secret, I wouldn't wear it, I would frame it. Shhhhh)

Happy Weekend - A Couple of Outfits and an award!

I promised a couple of more outfits this week so away we go!  It was very much a "run errands, clean house and do laundry" sort of week - so these are a bit boring.  But I wore them and am trying to keep it real up in here.  I also am on a spending freeze (save for the Toms silver glitter shoes I ordered with a gift card that needed to be used), so that means absolutely no new non-essential purchases for the foreseeable future.  It's going to be hard, but it's a challenge I'm willing to take!  Here's what I wore:

How do you like that sweet bruise on my arm, which I just noticed?  It looks nasty, but I honestly can't for the life of me remember how I got it.  Such a delicate flower I am - ha!
Top - Target
Pants - J.Crew
Shoes - Payless
Necklace and Earrings - made by my Mom

Get out your sunnies people, I've got some seriously white legs.  And the sad part is, they don't get much tanner than this.  I've got MAC's light affair on my toes - but you can't tell.  I need to put a bolder color on the tootsies ASAP!
Top - J.Crew
Skirt - Original Penguin
Shoes - Cynthia Vincent for Target
Earrings - made by Mom
Necklace - Vintage/thrifted
Bracelet - purchased from a random store in Seattle

Here's a close up of the pattern on the skirt, which I love!

Now on to the award (I love getting an award!).  The amazingly stylish and totally inspiring Oomph gave me the Kreative Blogger Award.
If you aren't reading Oomph then start now! Not only can she throw on some amazing outfits but she has the best manicures in blogland - did I mention she lives in Hawaii? Yeah, so jealous! The rules are, I'm supposed to list 10 facts/quirks about myself - so here goes:
  1. I've never been stung by a bee.
  2. I hate to have any unread or read messages in my inbox - I have to read, file and/or deal with them almost immediately.  If they sit around too long then it bothers me.  Same with my Google reader.
  3. I have to have a clean kitchen before I go to bed, I don't want to wake up and deal with breakfast with last night's crap still staring at me.
  4. I have designed fabric for every market in the book (including cars), I have been to more interior trade shows than I can count, have had access to some of the most amazing furniture manufacturers out there and have been an active member of Color Marketing Group - but I cannot, no matter how hard I try, decorate my house.  I have no knack for it at all.
  5. I have a Diet Coke problem I'm trying to kick.
  6. I don't really drink alcohol except on rare occasions.
  7. I love eating salads but HATE making them.
  8. I've never sent a text message.
  9. I talk to my Mom pretty much everyday (this baffles my husband - lol!)
  10. I'm a total "to do" list-a-holic.  Right now I have 3 separate ones going:  Blog, Household/Personal, and Job Hunt.  I try to cross one thing off each list everyday.
Now I'm supposed to pass it along to other bloggers (always such a tough choice) - here you go!

Have a great weekend!

Uniform Dressing 7:1

Uniform Dressing is back, I promised it would be.  This month I'm going to address a uniform that is front and center in my mind now that I'm sending out resumes - dressing for interviews.  In my paralegal schooling it was a topic that was addressed at the beginning of classes and at the end of the certification.  Keep in mind that working in the legal field is a bit different than working in a super creative field (like I did previously).  But I think the same rules apply for any interview situation, and here are some basic ones that I try to stick to (if I'm the interviewer or being interviewed).
  • No jangly/noisy jewelry.  There is nothing worse than talking to someone with clanky bracelets, etc, incredibly distracting.
  • No super sparkly or ginormous jewelry.  Again very distracting, for example, I hate to see large dangly earrings swinging to and fro - I won't be paying attention to what you are saying just your earrings.
  • Super-duper high heels.  I love a heel, but people get really weird about super high heels/platforms.  I remember during one big trend/design presentation I had with our sales staff (and CEO *ahem*), I wore some high red suede platforms with a simple, light grey, pinstripe pants suit.  I got as many comments about my shoes as I did about the presentation.  The comments weren't negative, but I wanted the sole (ha ha) focus to be on my presentation and not my shoes.  Same goes with interviews - you want more focus on you and less focus on what you are wearing.
  • Black suits (in my opinion) are the best, they go with everything and when you land that job you can break the suit apart and it ends up being way more versatile (just remember to dry clean the whole suit at the same time so the fabric color/texture stays consistent).
  • Keep it simple - less is more.  You and your skills need to stand out, not what you are wearing.  Trust me, if someone wears something odd or out of the ordinary, that's what's going to be remembered, not their skills or what they said.
I've assembled a basic interview uniform below.  I selected a couple of black suits with pants and with skirts.  I prefer pants, but that's my comfort level, if you feel more like you in a skirt then go for it.  I also prefer pants because I don't have to deal with the difficult "pantyhose or no pantyhose" question.  I would err on the wear pantyhose side especially in a conservative setting, you might be able to go without in a creative situation.  There's no cut and dry answer I'm afraid, but if there's any question I would go ahead and squeeze into the dreaded pantyhose.

Ideally it would be great to have a suit set that includes pants and a skirt with the blazer that goes with both.  Just a thought.

Now for what goes underneath the jacket.  Again keeping it simple and neutral, a white button down or if you are like me and tend to get the flop sweats when you are nervous (ick) then a sleeveless shell works great. With either choice make sure it's clean (no spots, make up smudges) and not too sheer or see-through.  Sounds like a "duh" statement, but I've seen these issues.

Now for accessories, again, simple, clean lines and not too many doodads to distract.  A basic black bag works wonders, I like to keep it large enough to fit a folder with my resumes and my tear sheet binder, but not so large I look like I came from the gym or a weekend away.  I try to only carry one bag, though occasionally I have to schlep a large portfolio case if they want to see actual fabric samples.  Try not to look like a bag lady is the bottom line.  As for shoes, again simple black pumps with a low to mid heel.

I hope you found this helpful and stay tuned for next week's installment!

What I Wore Wednesday!

Yay, it's my favorite time of the week, linking up with The Pleated Poppy to share some outfits I wore this week (and seeing what everyone else wore too).  I'm keeping it to two today, but check back in on Friday when I will post a couple of more.  It was a much better week than last and you can tell by my clothes and all the color that returned to my face.  Away we go...
It was all about layers on this day - chilly morning, warm afternoon.
Cardigan - Forever21
Top - Rodarte for Target
Tank (underneath) - Target
Pants - J.Crew
Shoes - Payless
Necklace and Earrings - made by my Mom

Another day of layers, it was warm but I had to go to a meeting and look somewhat professional, so I busted out the black blazer.  And the white pants, heck yeah, I busted those out too!!!  Trust me when it's already been in the 90's you can wear white pants ;o)
Blazer - Gap
Top - Old Navy
Pants - Old Navy
Shoes - Cole Haan
Necklace - made by my Mom

My Five - Donna Karan Fall 2011

Hmmm, this was a different sort of collection for Donna Karan.  A bit more "buttoned up" than usual, a very nipped-in waist/pencil skirt silhouette.  I loved the muted color palette, but overall the collection was not very "Donna".  I keep wanting her to build on the genius that was her Spring 2010 collection  (which was absolutely stunning).  I'll keep waiting, but in the meantime enjoy my five favorite looks from this collection.

My Take - Malin Akerman

I l-o-v-e this outfit, it's the blue pants that make it for me.
Break it down piece by piece and it's a simple look, nothing groundbreaking, but those just-the-right-color blue pants push it to the next level.  Here's my take, enjoy!

I Want This! - Leopard Bracelet

I hope you all have an amazing weekend, but first I wanted to share this amazingly glam leopard bracelet available at Furbish Studio.  Can you believe it's only $18?!?!  I NEED this in my life - now!

Here it is on Jamie's wrist.

Love it!

I've been itching to make a trip to Raleigh, NC so my girl can visit her cousins and so I can see one of my best friends (and maybe check out how much my University's campus has changed).  You can rest assured when I do visit I will be dropping into Furbish and making lots of purchases!

My Five (well six) - Chanel Fall 2011

First of all, thanks for all the well wishes about yesterday's post.  Sounds like this stomach virus is winding it's way around the Southeast, so watch out!  Here's a car update, turns out the battery was bad and since we just got a new one a few months ago I took it in and got a replacement, what a relief.  I should give a shout out to AAA who came and jumped my car in record time.

Now, back to the task at hand, my two cents about Chanel's Fall 2011 collection.  I've said it before and I'll say it again - dear Mr. Lagerfeld, please, please start editing these collections.  I take nothing away from the  beauty of the clothing and his design genius, but you could remove 1/3 of this collection and not miss a thing.  Bottom line, it gets repetitive.  I will say this is my least favorite Chanel collection I've seen in a while, but there were some looks I loved.  Here are my faves along with some detail shots (along with one look that should have been edited before it was even thought of - eek!).

Love the mixture of the greys and the textures in this look.

Love the tiny touches of hunter green on the sleeves.

Only include to take note of the heel height and the lack of platform.

Now, do you see what I mean about editing?  Who on Earth would wear this jumper/hazmat suit?  Why would you want pockets on your knees?  And if you were to wear this, would you be in a situation where you would roll up the pant legs and throw on some pointy toe pumps?  Come on Karl, work with us here :o)
