Completely self-indulgent and gratuitous

I can't help but share the few seconds that my baby brother appeared on last Friday's Days of Our Lives (he appeared 2 more times, but not as good as this clip).  He's the blonde guy on the laptop in the background.  I'm such a proud big sis!

Love this Drew Barrymore quote

"I don't have the time or discipline or interest in having a perfect-10 body, I work out, I eat right, but I'll always be a little bit of Jell-O on a pole."

Happy Halloween!!

Oh, I do love me some Halloween!  Here are some of my favorite images from Tim Burton's Magical Fashion editorial in Harpers Bazaar recently (photographed by Tim Walker).  I was looking through the magazine and these literally stopped me in my tracks.  So beautiful!  They are celebrating Tim Burton's retrospective at MoMA.  I would love to see that.  Enjoy and have a Happy Halloween!

Oh and one gratuituous post of my daughter from last Halloween - she was a cat, natch (well, wore an outfit with a cat on it)!

Southwest Airlines prototype Green airplane

Southwest introduced the prototype at it's media day on 10/21, the main goal of the Boeing 737-700 is to reduce weight by almost 5 lbs per seat, so it saves fuel and reduces emissions.  The plane will serve as a test environment for new recyclable materials and products.  I personally love the InterfaceFLOR* carpet used (great idea, I mean, how often have you gotten on a plane and that center carpet looks like crap, stained and buckled.  With FLOR you can replace the soiled section and it won't look as icky):

Here is a look at some of the new upholstery options from e-Leather and IZIT Leather:

Starting 11/1 Southwest is amping up it's onboard recycling program too.  Good Green news all around!
See entire article here.

*disclaimer - I used to work for Interface so I'm a bit biased about their fab products - but trust me try the carpet tiles and you will love them!

I just love this purple Calvin Klein Collection gown Eva Mendes wore to the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London this year.  Just beautiful!

Jewelry organizing

I think I saw this article in Real Simple magazine in early 2008, when I was quite pregnant and trying to unpack and get the house semi-organized as best I could before the little one arrived.  Anyway, Real Simple helped her clean up and organize her jewelry and I just loved the way it turned out - you could see most everything and that was so appealing.

With jewelry it can be "out of sight, out of mind" for me.  So I attempted to put something together that would enable me to see what I had too.  Keep in mind I was very pregnant and didn't want to buy anything, I just wanted a temporary solution that was quick and easy and I could fine tune it later (much later as it turns out - like when we move).  So I grabbed an old cork board from my office, some little brass screw-in hooks we had and that was it.  Here's what it looks like now:

My earrings and necklaces are hanging up there so I can see what I have.  Eventually, when we move, I want to make it look nicer with perhaps a frame and some paint and/or fabric.  But hey, it has served me well for something that cost nothing.  Oh yeah, and that's my nice walk-in closet that I will miss when we move.  I had it all to myself and it was right off the master bath.  Good times.

I want this! - Lulu Frost Plaza number necklace

I have been in want of one of these necklaces since they came out a couple of years ago.  I was in NYC then and I should have just marched my rear end up to Barneys (where you could get them back then) and just gotten one.  But stupidly, I did not.  The good news is that they are still available (now with the addition of bracelets and pins too - though I'm unsure if they are the actual numbers and letters as they were back then or casts from the original numbers and letters - anyone know?).  So far I've found two places - Kaight NYC (with a 15% off pre-order discount thru the end of the month - details here) and Sucre 212-352-1640 (via Real Simple magazine 11/09).  The entire collection can be seen on the Lulu Frost website.  What conversation pieces.  *sigh*

I want this - Louboutin!

I know, I know, Christian Louboutin shoes, kinda sick of hearing about them.  However these are completely stellar!  Ahhh, sweet dreams...

Apparently the man, himself will be at Berdorf's tomorrow (10/22) from 2-6pm for those in NYC.

I want this - chalkboard paint in 24 colors!

How totally exciting is this?!?  HudsonPaint has just come out with chalboard paint in 24 fab colors.  Imagine the possibilities.  I have a small table I painted in black (way back when chalkboard paint first came out).  I'm thinking about something for my daughter's room in a nice bright pink, we'll see...

Phoebe Philo talks about Celine with Vogue

This article was featured in October's Vogue - a very interesting read about her return to fashion (see my picks from her Spring 2010 Celine collection here).  But what totally hooked me in were the photographs by Annie Leibovitz, just beautiful!  Taken at Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan, CT.  Wow!

Honest Scrap

My blogging BFF (if there is such a thing - and if memory serves I think she was the first person who wasn't already one of my "real life" friends who commented on one of my posts.  I will be forever grateful.) Townhouselady has been kind enough to honor me with the Honest Scrap Award!   Here's how it works...

1) Say thanks and give a link to the presenter of the award.  (Thank you Townhouselady and do check out her amazing blog here!)

2) Share "10 Honest Things" about myself. (oh dear)

3) Present this award to 7 others whose blogs I find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged me.

4) Tell those 7 people they've been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving.

Here goes nothin':
1.  I am addicted to Cap'n Crunch with Crunch Berries and Diet Coke (not together, but I can guarantee you that at any given point in the day I am either consuming one of these or seriously thinking about it).

2.  I have not held a paying job in over 2 years and it's making me INSANE.  Between the economy and having a baby, it's been the perfect "unemployment storm".  So my job hunt continues...

3.  I love toilet humor - yeah, I'm basically a 12 year old boy at heart.  Anything gas related is my forte.

4.  I gained 65 pounds when I was pregnant.  There I said it - it was hard to say.  I tried, I really tried, but my body held on to calories like I was a bear about to hibernate.  In fact when I went back for my 6 week post partum check up I had only lost 1 lb from my "checking-into-the-hospital-to-give-birth" weight. I had somehow managed to gain more weight even after delivering an 8 pound baby.  I demanded a scientific explanation, it was something like "retaining fluids".  Whatever.  I have lost almost all of it though.  Whew.

5.  I think I'm the last person on Earth to carry a plain ol' cell phone with no bells and whistles.  Send and receive calls only.  I kick it old school.  Though I am seriously in want of an iPhone (hubby, if you are reading this - not likely - please take note - again, not likely)

6.  I have a million coats but I hate to wear them.  I like the idea of them (and hey when I lived up North it was absolutely necessary) but down here in GA it's just too much trouble.

7.  I love reality TV, but not what it's become.  Strange, right.  I mean please VH1 no more crappy "dating" shows and E! I beg you, no more Kardashians and this gonna be trainwreck "Lamas" show and also go ahead and dump The Girls Next Door it jumped the shark long ago.  The only reality shows I watch now are on Bravo.

8.  I'm totally and completely addicted to iCarly on Nickelodeon.  Yeah, I know it's a show for tweens, but darn it, it's FUNNY!  Trust me on this one, watch one episode (I recommend "iWin A Date" which made my husband laugh out loud).  Jerry Trainor (plays big brother Spencer) may be one of the best comic actors out there right now.  It's the show that gave me my new motto: "My Mom thinks I'm awesome!"

9.  My wardrobe is the worst it's ever been and I'm almost embarassed to be seen in public.  *sigh*

10.  It has taken me over a week to do this blog post, I worried about every aspect of it, from what should I say to whose blogs am I gonna pick (some of these people don't know me and will think I'm nuts), etc.  I worry WAY too much!

Okay kittens, now it's your turn.  TAG - you're it!

CSO at Junius and Pippi Take the Cake - we went to high school together, reconnected on Facebook.  She has the most amazing blog about parenting, kids and life.  She's the Mommy I wish I were.

Kheli at Remember Your Karma - former coworker, now friend and a fab quilter.

Deb at Dumbwit Tellher - such a sweetheart and her posts are out of this world!

~JCB~ - I go to her blog when I need an "escape" her photography is beyond divine.

Jill at The Good Life For Less - she gives me hope for my wardrobe's future, she's Superwoman!

Nicole at Making It Lovely - I want her to decorate my house, love her style.

Camila at High-Heeled Foot In The Door - I love following her decorating adventures, so inspiring.

Alexander McQueen Spring 2010 - revisited

I decided to take another look at Alexander McQueen's Spring collection (see my previous post here), this time focusing more on the details and boy, I'm glad I did.  The accessories and embellishments are quite cool (in an uncomfortable, almost disturbing way).  Honestly, when I first looked at the collection, I didn't even notice that some of the girls were carrying clutches, when in fact they were.  I'll take any one of those said clutches, just beautiful.  And how they walked in those shoes, I will never know.  Here are some highlights in my eyes (there are a lot):

House Beautiful Designer Visions 2009: Thom Filicia

I just cracked open the November House Beautiful and fell in love with the showhouse Thom Filicia designed for them.  Now it's not 100% my style, but there are so many things to love.  I love that there's color, but not too much and not too bold and that there's an overall warm vibe.  Here are a few of my favorite things:

#1, RALEIGH-DURHAM - Americas Smartest Cities - The Daily Beast

I may be a bit biased seeing as I was born in Raleigh, attended NCSU and love it there, but I couldn't agree more :o)

Via The Daily Beast  - Metro Area Population: 1,578,527 Daily Beast IQ Score: 170 Raleigh-Durham has just about every intangible useful in attracting and developing a smart populace: It’s a university hub, including three of the nation’s elite schools (Duke, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University), and those schools led to one of the nation’s great technology incubators (Research Triangle). On top of that, Raleigh, as the state’s capital, attracts engaged political minds, as well. “We are fortunate to have great universities in Raleigh-Durham and great ‘smart’ industries that enrich our community greatly,” Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker told The Daily Beast. Enrichment enough to top our list.

Elie Saab Spring 2010

Ah, well, we've reached the end of my Fashion Week coverage for this season (are those tears of joy or sadness).  I've had a good time sharing my favorite looks and I hope you've enjoyed seeing them.

Last, but not least is Elie Saab and his beautiful dresses - look for at least one on a red carpet near you.  Here are my highlights:
